Beside the weekly peer-support group meetings, we have extra activities like car washes, picnics, movie nights, etc. We participate in the annual events like the Gay Pride Parade in October and go to GayDays at Walt Disney World the first Saturday in June and the AIDS Walk Orlando in April. Some of the activities cost money. The car washes are a great way for everyone to get involve. Plus they generate money for us to help cover the costs.
The single most important issue for this group is to be pro-active in the community, a schedule of events where OYA as a group can participate in events for other organizations not only reinforces that this organization is pro-active, but gives us an opportunity to touch new people and members.
There is no cost to being a member of OYA, through fundraisers, corporate donations, and events, OYA raises funds for general operating costs, marketing, and events.
The ideas are endless. Here are a few of the activities we have done in the past:
- Movie nights
- Bowling parties
- Theatre involvement (We produced a play at the Orlando Fringe Festival in 2007,
2008 & 2010)
- Theme park trips
- Participating in community events
- AIDS walk
- Sporting events
- Social events
Below are some of the educational opportunities for GLBTQ youth in which the OYA gets
- Semi-annual HIV awareness
- Safe Schools Summit
- Pride Parade
- Health Fairs
- Public speaking to other groups
- Parents & Friends of Lesbians and Gay (PFLAG)
